A chamber ensemble orbits a piano that refuses to behave like furniture. Wonky jazz phrasing and algorithmic instruction trade authority without reducing the players to MIDI scenery.
How the machine enters
Jameszoo, Hendrik Vincent Koops and Jan van Balen designed chains of musical rules that generate custom MIDI for a self-governing Disklavier. Sixteen acoustic musicians perform around that algorithmic piano, making the system one unstable member of the ensemble rather than its conductor.
