Cello and synthesis meet as materials rather than opposites. A single long piece moves through bright partials, unstable beating and hard-edged electronic mass, turning spectral analysis into music with real physical tension.
How the machine enters
Railton's cello spectra were analysed and digitally resynthesized as collections of partials. Eilbacher and Railton calculated the distances between those frequencies to construct the harmonic system, then arranged simplified synthetic tones against the performed cello. The artists designed the analysis, synthesis and form; no machine-learning claim is made.
